What are the instructor's teaching strengths?
312 responsesHow can this instructor improve as a teacher?
279 responsesNot sure because the class content might have made it difficult, but making sure there is a plan and method to make sure the students are interactive and get us talking. I feel like we all had things to say and would be willing to participate in discussions but it was just too awkward at first and hard to take that first step. Monitoring us from smaller groups and then into larger classroom discussions with clear talking points could help this.
everything he did as a ta was amazing, however, i am personally a visual learner so near the end of the quarter when we started doing presentations of each theorist, it really helped me follow along with what was being said in discussion. i think incorporating that for the future would really help visual learners like me! thank you for your hard work <3 i really enjoyed coming to each discussion section :)
There is not much that I would change but sometimes the breakout rooms are awkward because sometimes we forgot what we are supposed to talk about or the questions are confusing or can be easily answered well before the end of the time we are give. I found myself getting bored in breakout rooms as many times we didn't have much to discuss.
I know it's his first time teaching this class in this format so his lectures are a little shorter than class time but it's honestly nice to be let out early. Maybe he could work on making the lectures run the appropriate amount of time but it's not a big deal as long as we discuss all the content. I think he is doing a great job.
I can't really think of anything besides maybe rather discussing the open-ended questions within the whole class as students (who want to volunteer), rather than break-out rooms. I think that could be better because then more students know about our experiences/judgements, alongside the professor himself.
I unfortunately was not able to attend office hours due to having another class at the same time, so in the future it would be nice if there could be a poll to determine when office hours would be held (so that it worked for both the TA and also a majority of people in the class).
I would have helped to differentiate the authors more (especially in the first half of the course). We also could have structured discussion around direct quotes that the professor highlighted in class. Thank you Sam for a great quarter!
I submitted sources to be reviewed, and it was faster to go to the professor's office hours, several days later, than to wait for TA feedback. By the time feedback was given, we had one week to write a 7-page paper for 20% of our grade
I appreciated that during the first two weeks of the strike he still showed up to lectures. Towards our final week and big exam he wasn't available. All the work and study guides were left for one TA to handle all by himself.
Maybe can use other examples outside of class reading to help simplify the main point by relating it to other things he can think about that are similar which he did a couple of times but i would have like to see that more.
It took a very long time for grades on big exams and papers to come out. It made it very difficult to plan ahead, as my grade could drastically change with a submission of one score. TA also didn't respond to emails.
Their work is good but just please have more explaining on the homework, (cuz I think online class sometimes if the homework include some idea may familiar with their major but not famous for other major students.)
I think he can perhaps create PollEv questions so that the class can see the difference in opinions. Also it would encourage more students to participate in discussion if they are shy.
I wish he'd use presentations more often when going over the readings so we'd be able to review at home as well, and it'd give us a better understanding on what we need to focus on.
Maybe drop a quiz or offer an assingment to help out a quiz if you did poorly on one quiz. It can dramatically lower a grade and not reflect how you did in the class overall.
If his feedback would come quicker so that I can incorporate it into writing the revised paper, it would be helpful because I would not want to go down the wrong path.
Perhaps expanding more upon the exact definitions of the topics and even showing the differences between concepts with similar names would be good for the discussion.
Can improve by adding comments to the midterm in the future. I do not know how to get a 40/40 because I must be "exceptional" but have no idea what that means.
I think they shouldn't expect the class to be extremely social. I understand that is the goal, but that should not be expected on the first meeting.
I don't have anything that I can think of! I thought he presented the content in a well organized format that helped me understand the content well
The TA did very well in communicating with the students and helping when needed so I don't think that anything needs to be changed for the future.
I do not have any recommendations for my TA. My one for the class however would be that lecture assignments are worth too much of the grade.
Sometimes discussion can get a bit quiet, with no one speaking, so maybe some more topics and prompts to get a discussion going.
I don't have any recommendations, he was organized and understanding during discussion sections whenever students needed help.
Reading assignments were very long and intimidating. Most times I would not read all of it just because it would be too much.
I would say I wish the professor posted the lecture slides after class so it can further help when studying for the tests.
It's hard to say anything else he could do better. I think he did the best he could despite not being in the department.
Give more complete notes, I often leave discussion with scattered notes of key words rather than explaining readings.
Using powerpoints for presenting the information would be useful. He started using them at the end of discussions.
I did not interact with this TA but I encourage them to continue to do well in guiding students in their courses.
I would suggest it would be greater for us to get more face-to-face opportunities other than the office hours.
Genuinely hard to say. The TA cared about the topic, and it showed. It's hard to say how they could improve.
I really liked the program you used to display your notes, but the small font made it a bit hard to read.
kinda felt like he'd get bogged in details from time to time, test preps weren't super accurate to exam
Reviewing more readings and concepts would be helpful, oftentimes discussion is only over one concept.
Perhaps having students be encouraged to talk with one another to apply content into conversation.
I think that giving more feedback or interacting more with the discussion posts would be helpful.
The TA can work on his communication skills with students, but other than that he was fantastic.
Honestly his methods weren't flawed and discussions always felt productive and worth attending.
Just keep doing what you have been doing in discussions and ... don't lose your enthusiasm.
Maybe also trying some examples similar to homework to make that easier for the sutdents.
maybe go a little slower on some points as the whiteboard is a little hard to follow
Keep on doing what you're doing. I looked forward to your discussion each week!
A lot of the discussion time felt like we were just trying to pass time.
I do not have any recommendations because they have done a great job!
Being able to relate content to lecture material and more engaging.
Maybe Kahoots or more fun ways to interact with the course material
Take things slower. His accent makes it a tad hard to understand.
Be available for discussions and not flake on discussion meetings
Stay true to your original intention to be a good teacher

Any other comments about this course?
44 responsesI really enjoyed this course and was nervous if it would be hard or out of my interest, especially as STEM major who is not related to the field of sociology. Fortunately, the professor made me extremely enjoy learning about all these concepts, given his teaching style, ability to explain in-depth and in an interesting and fun way. He is one of my best professors!
Really fun course to take, and although it is an Upper Division writing course with a heavier work load, it was spaced out very well and set up to help improve writing skills wonderfully.
The course was very accessible and appropriate level as an introductory level. Sometimes the reading felt a bit excessive in length,
Loved it, you did not need to be a baseball expert to do well in this class, all that was needed was the will to learn.
good course, kinda hard, hard to follow, BUT Sam stepped up and would make it easy to understand
Overall, a really great course and the professor was nice/ understanding.
Excellent course ... UC Irvine should offer more on this subject.
Great class considering this is his firt time teaching it!
I really liked Professor and learned a lot from his class

The material was presented very clearly and in an easy to understand way. I felt I learned the class topics far better from this discussion section than in lecture. Integrating real life examples, opening discussion up to the class, and covering the readings was extremely beneficial to my learning. Additionally, the notes prepared/presented for each discussion section every week were clear, to the point, and easy to understand. I cannot emphasize enough how much this discussion section helped and benefitted my learning in this course. Additionally, allowing us to send outlines/drafts of our final paper before the due date was very kind and generous, since I understand that this was not necessary/required and likely took a decent amount of time/effort to provide feedback for everyone. Im extremely grateful for everything done for us by Sam in this discussion section. It was clear that the subject matter is interesting and important to him and made me want to try understand better.
saverio was always willing to meet up with us after class and had his office hours open for extended periods of time. he is very well educated about each week's topic and responded to every question that was asked. i might say he's one of the best ta's i've ever had in my years of attending uci. he's also super relatable and funny, i appreciate him and his efforts that ensure we understood each theorist. he puts care into his work and would even annotate the books alongside with us, and refer us the quotes from each theorist so we could study off them. WE LOVE YOU!!!! #1 TA
He was very knowledgable in sociology and demonstrated that clearly when answering students questions. He also was well versed in the topics for this class in particular and was helpful in clarifying topics for assignments. His personal feedback on assignments and especially papers guided my writing to improve when revising the papers. Overall, he seems to really enjoy teaching and enjoys sociological theories. Also, he always has office hours which provides us students with more opportunities in getting help.
Sam is an excellent TA. Sam prepared for discussion sessions, discussed recent concepts we had in lectures or in readings and, encouraged the class to contribute their thoughts, interpretations and perspectives from the material. Sam showed students respect and that he valued their time in discussion. Sam also provided excellent recommendations on source materials for our research paper, and provided meaningful feedback on our drafts. Sam is excellent, one of the best TAs I've had a UC Irvine.
He is interested in the class and encourages questions to help students better understand material and also is good at summarizing main points from lecture that I would miss until he pointed it out which made me have a clearer understanding on topics. I honestly really enjoy his approach to discussions even though I missed some due to some issues I ran into but never any issue had trying to stay focused in this class.
I think his structure, set-up, and overall ability to retain the knowledge and thoroughly explain all the concepts as well as the varying perspectives is really incredible. Additionally, I appreciate how he asks and questions us on why we think something may be, or any certain patterns. It's challenging but he actually puts us into perspective and questions our knowledge or thoughts, which is really good.
The instructor was very passionate about the material covered in class. I would say that one of their strengths was their ability to put themselves in the perspective of both the Professor and the student. They were able to predict what the Professor might expect on the midterm and final, and plan for that. Additionally, they were able to understand where students might get confused, with the material.
Sam was very good at starting discussions that really allowed us to think and test our understanding. He took what we knew from lectures and applied it to more aspects within our daily lives, which was very engaging and enlightening. He was also very good at discussing the main points from each lecture that were important for the midterms, properly explaining the terms and furthering our understanding.
Saverio Michael Roscigno was always willing and happy to help. He would condense all the material taught the previous week in such a comprehensible and explicit manner. Moreover, he would always be wiling to meet outside of his discussion and office hours times. I will forever be grateful for his help in this course, which was definitely a challenging course.
He is very organized, kind, and engaging. I appreciate that he really takes time to read our responses to the textbook readings and on assignments. He makes lectures very enjoyable and informative even if none of us want to be sitting at our desks for nearly 3 hours during summer. Just a very knowledgeable and helpful guy and you can tell he enjoys teaching.
He's very passionate about his field and he's extremely friendly. I like how much he engages with his class, and it makes me maintain my attention span even through Zoom, which is a very good indicator. I think being able to see him as a peer also helps me make sure I engage in his work and do my best, because he's relatable.
TA Sav's willingness to help with going through my first draft of a five-page essay (presumably several times with other people) and give quality criticism made me very glad to have such a competent TA. Discussions were also quite engaging because he commonly provided context to what we discussed in class in a modern context.
Super passionate about course material! His notes were always on point and correlated well with the lecture. I like how he expressed terms in his own words so we could understand the material better. Always asked questions to the class to encourage his students to engage and the questions were very essential to our learning.
Lectures are very clear and defines what we need to know for tests thats outside the readings. Also, I thought it was really fair when majority of the class got a question wrong on a quiz, it would not be counted. That is so much better than other professors just simply saying "you should of listened during class more".
He is very good at explaining the reading and lectures which was very helpful because sometimes the lecture or reading were difficult to understand but he made it easier with his discussion sections. I would not have succeeded or i would 've had a hard time in this class without his discussion sections
Sam is such a smart young man! He was able to answer every single question we had, having him as a TA was really helpful. At time I found myself getting confused with what the professor was trying to iterate and Sam did a great job of reassuring and re-teaching what we needed to know
My TA Sam posted weekly wrap up posts going over that weeks topic. I found these posts very helpful because they gave an overview of the general consensus of the discussion of the week. It was also a very helpful summary of the weekly reading if anything needed more clarification.
I liked the weekly recaps that were posted to announcements. They were insightful and were nice to read and reflect on the previous week's material. Also, how Sam would respond to student discussions and add highlights/bold to add emphasis to other discussion posts.
He is very well-spoken and good at keeping students engaged by taking student feedback and stimulating discussion. He also helped a lot in simplifying the professor's teachings and assigned readings and made the class much more manageable and easy to understand.
The TA was very responsive to emails and left constructive comments on discussion posts. Additionally, his weekly summaries of discussions were extremely helpful to get a recap of the course material and different perspectives that my peers came up with.
Great at explaining the topics we went over during the week and since the professor focuses more on old works, Saverio does a good job at tying those topics to modern examples. Provides great feedback on our papers as well to prep the final draft.
Sam is a really really helpful TA, I would say his discussion section is the most useful one to me compared to a lot of other sections I attended. He went over important details for us during the section and made the course structure clearer.
I loved how our TA interacted with the class, and how passionate he seemed about the subject. He made speaking up in class very easy and enjoyable. He did a great job connecting the things we were learning in class to the outside world.
Always very responsive. Easy to talk to. Answers all questions to the best of his abilities and comes up with potential questions when the class is silent. Always goes over the material, especially during discussions before finals.
This TA was extremely helpful with the understanding of course topics and was very inclusive during discussion. The discussions we had during the section were always relevant to the lectures somehow so that was also very helpful.
How interactive and kind he was with the students in our class. He did a great job letting students speak up and contribute to the conversation. Did a great job making the course material easily digestible. Also a stand out dude.
The TA did a good job focusing on the course material as well as summarizing and highlighting important points in our discussion. He also brought up other interesting points for us to think about that related to the materials.
He was informative and encouraged us to speak to him for any questions or concerns that we may have, he even allowed us to submit a rough draft of the course paper that everyone was nervous about, I appreciated the gesture
They brought several outside examples that allowed us to use the concepts on real world which made them clearer. Our TA was also very outgoing and relaxed, creating a relaxed environment where I was comfortable speaking.
I think he is very understanding to his students and is willing to explain anything that his students are wondering. Also the slides and graphs are very interesting and are easy to understand while also being engaging.
Being able to discuss examples of the course material by connecting them to the students' personal experiences. He was also pretty good at giving his own examples from his sociological research findings.
He was really clear to follow and thorough in reviewing the important sections of the course material. I thought his explanations were concise but helpful enough in getting a better idea of the content.
He would summarize the readings we did for lectures and helped us understand something's better that maybe the professor didn't really focus on and helped on some readings that were sort of difficult
He is very thorough with the content he teaches and ensures that everyone is understanding the topics. I really appreciate the professor taking the time to help and explain during office hours too.
He has the ability to hold really good discussions and provide further insight on each week's readings, he makes students feel comfortable enough to give their input and participate in discussion.
He creates a friendly environment and encourages students to participate without pressuring anyone to do so. Extremely flexible and will address to any student concerns/ questions they may have.
The TA consistently engaged with the students each week by replying to discussion posts that he found interesting. He also synthesized the discussions each week and provided detailed summaries.
This TA was always organized and always give very insightful feedback to post. They were always available to go to for help if concepts were ever hard to grasp or you needed a bit of support.
He really simplified the readings down to be really comprehensible which is the only reason I'd be passing the class. He also provided us with a lot of helpful resources for upcoming exams.
The strongest points of this TA was being able to discuss the course material as a group discussion during section. The conversation was always there and students were consistently engaged.
Was definitely prepared to help anyone with any questions and knowledgeable and honest on what we needed to succeed. Provided himself as a resource and was friendly and very down-to-earth.
The slides on the readings were very helpful. Also, the list of annotations were helpful because it was hard to write down the important page numbers thrown out in class by the professor.
Our TA made sure to cover parts/go over topics that will be discussed in lecture to help prepare us. He cares about his students and gives us a chance to talk and ask questions, always.
They had a deep knowledge of the subject of sociology, they offered great feedback when I asked for it on my essay, and they consistently tried to keep discussion engaging for students.
super duper good feedback. i loved seeing what you had to say about my discussions of the readings in your comments. thanks for a good quarter sam! also good luck with all those dogs
I liked the Sam always had a list of topics to cover, similar to lecture, but would just talk about what he felt was relevant, which I think helped keep me engaged during discussion.
Was able to keep the discussions engaging, able to get participation from the class, made students feel comfortable in classroom environment, and approachable when asking questions.
Strengths include diagrams when used to compare notable leaders and different forms of government. The review sessions for exams are also incredibly helpful with accurate examples.
The TA had excellent notes. They were laid out very well and aided in his explanation of topics. He also explained things very well so that I understood all concepts of the course.
One big strength was his in field research and knowledge of the topics presented. Sometimes I feel like outside readings don't really relate to the class but not in this class.
Absolute MVP: during rough drafts he tells you exactly what you need to change in order to get an A on essays. Super chill guy who knows how to TA efficiently and superbly.
I would say he was very able to connect points made in class with other examples that weren't mentioned in class, which helped solidify my understanding of a lot of topics.
The instructor is extremely good at creating an inclusive and engaging class environment. He adds some graphs and charts in the slides to help us understand the concepts.
He is pretty generous about giving discussion notes from other sections. He also could explain some problems a bit briefly despite not being an economics Ph.D. student.
I would say the discussion section was a benefit for me to understand the course material more in depth and the TA was very supportive and helpful in this process.
This TA was able to communicate fairly clearly what the main points of certain lectures were and what we should be thinking about when answering certain questions.
Make the discussion like a conversation with students talked about how in real life situations or current news related to the topics we are learning in sociology.
Provided us with the proper material to prepare for the midterm well. Additionally, I appreciated the slides as they summarized the content well and effectively.
TA gave in depth comments in discussion sections and asked questions that were not condescending, but invoked genuine thought or consideration about the topic.
I've never interacted with the TA but I do know that they scheduled an in person quiz review session which shows they made an effort to review class material.
They prepared slides with notes that helped to summarize key points of lecture and went over any parts that were important but were not very clear in lecture
He explained the material he was going over very well. He made sure to go over anything from the lecture that may have been confusing which was very nice.
The strongest points of the TA in discussion section was being responsive to students and try to make sure students understood what was taught in lecture.
The TA would be sure to answer our questions and even give examples of what we were talking about during discussion and even bring examples from lecture.
I enjoyed how informed he was about the subject and really helped us when it came to the paper and exams and really wanted to see the students succeed.
Providing simplified notes of the lecture that provided great aid in preparing for exams along with helped with understanding the material a bit more.
The TA really paid attention to the student's input and discussions. He was really helpful during quiz reviews and helped prepare students a lot.
He highlighted good points in our discussion posts which showed the most important information we put. The yellow highlighter made it stand out.
Does well in explaining the concepts touched on during lecture and in assigned readings. Prepared students well for any assignments or exams.
Responses to discussion posts made the discussion more interesting as they raised interesting questions and pushed the discussion further
He is very friendly and engaging. One of the best TAs I have ever met in UCI. He always provides thoughtful comments during discussions.
Very helpful in terms of creating an understanding during times the students could not fully understand the instructions of the course.
He helped to understand the key concepts of the course by making it clear to connect the course material with the real life experience.
During the lecture, he would take note of confusing things and go over them during the discussion section, which I found very helpful.
He was so clear in his explanations and his own spare time to answer emails quickly and look over outlines of essays we sent him.
This TA made sure that everyone had answers to any questions that were asked and put their best effort into everything they do.
During office hours, the TA would give good thorough rundowns of the topic discussed during the week which was really helpful.
He greatly explained the readings for people to understand. He went in depth on the themes of the readings which were useful.
I enjoyed how active the TA was in the discussion; he would givet feedback/ direct people in the right direction when needed.
Very focused, very helpful, and overall contributed to my success in the course. He was great and made this course enjoyable.
The TA broaden concepts on a larger scale and incorporated themes from the reading that are apparent in the world around us.
Very interesting in discussing class topics and did a great job keeping students engaged by applying real life applications
Explaining concepts and ensuring students know what a topic is broadly about, allowing students to speak and ask questions
Clear and helpful. Explained lecture concepts amazingly. The discussion was extremely organized, and he was also friendly.
He was very helpful explaining every class concept, reading, and preparing us for our assignments and tests. He was great!
TA clearly explained information to us whenever we needed help. Engaged the whole class to talk by opening a discussion.
Sam made very thoughtful and valid posts on multiple discussion posts of not just mine, but others in my group as well.
The TA's strongest points m discussion section was his knowledge of the material and how he compared it to life today.
The TA took the time to explain various concepts and ideas throughly ensuring everyone had an understanding for it.
The TAs in general for this course were very helpful regarding all-around assistance in this course. Thank you!
Incredible instrutor who actually cares about students and sociology and had fun and engaging online lectures.
I didn't attend, but most definitely it was the in depth study guides that reviewed all the midterm material.
The TA was quick to respond and taught me how to effectively solve different problems on the practice tests.
His instructor, who teaches strength, helps me with the paper and gives me suggestions to make it better.
Fair grading, always willing to help students. Explanations in office hours were very clear and relevant.
The strongest points of the TA in discussion section was his ability to apply concepts to the real world.
went over the lecture material readings very well in a way to help students really understand the content
He touched on points that were ambiguous in class, and he also drew in interestong real life examples.
Very good at giving feedback on assignments and pointing out areas to improve to benefit the student.
I liked all of the discussions we had with the TA. They related to the concepts talked about in class
Sam explained any concepts that were confusing which helped me better understand the course material.
Thoroughly went over material and worked hard to answer questions for students in comprehensive ways
Very good at explaining the lecture content students were unsure of. Engaged students effectively.
Very thorough, prepared us well for the exam. Very positive, I enjoyed coming to his discussions.
They were always patients and attentive. Whenever I had a question, they were willing to help.
his knowledge in the subject and answered any questions students had very well and thoroughly
The TA reviewed material that was mentioned in the lecture and answered all of our questions.
